Carpet Cleaning: Air Movers Needed

A cleaned carpet dries on schedule only if enough air is moving over it. Size the fleet the way you size anything by coverage: divide the wet square footage by what one air mover handles, and round up.

Quick formula: Wet area over per-mover coverage, rounded up:

The formula

ROUNDUP turns the fractional fan count into whole units you actually own:

=ROUNDUP(B2/C2,0) // wet area over per-mover coverage, rounded up

How it works

Coverage-based sizing, same as any material:

B2/C2 divides the wet square footage by the area one air mover keeps drying.
ROUNDUP(...,0) rounds up, because a fraction of a fan still means setting a whole one.
Keep the coverage in a cell — a low-profile mover and a high-velocity one cover different areas, and your standard may not be 175.

This is a floor, not a ceiling. Water-damage drying often calls for more air by the room's cubic feet and the class of loss; a routine cleaning dries fine at the coverage rate.

Pitfalls & errors

Coverage is a starting point. Thick pad, high humidity, and poor airflow all slow drying — add a fan and a moisture meter check rather than trusting the count alone.

Do not round the fan count down. One short air mover leaves a damp strip that can wick, smell, and callback within a day or two.

Frequently asked questions

How much area does one air mover cover?

A common rule of thumb is one mover per 150 to 200 square feet of wet carpet, angled to push air across the surface. Restoration standards go by room and airflow, so treat the coverage number as your own tuned figure.

Does more fans always dry faster?

Up to a point. Once the air is moving well, humidity becomes the limit and you need a dehumidifier, not more fans. The count sizes airflow; drying still needs somewhere for the moisture to go.
