Split a total event budget across categories by percentage — venue, catering, photography, flowers. Each line is the budget times its percent, tied out so the categories sum to the total.
The example
$30k budget, 45% catering.
| A | B | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Category | Amount |
| 2 | Catering 45% | $13,500 |
| 3 | Venue 25% | $7,500 |
The formula
The formula:
How it works
How it works:
- Assign each category a percent of the total (they should sum to 100%).
- Each line =
ROUND(total_budget × percent, 0). - Make the last line a remainder —
total - SUM(others)— so it ties out exactly. - Track actual vs budget per category to catch overruns as you book vendors.
Common wedding splits run roughly: catering ~40–50%, venue ~20%, photography ~10–12%, flowers ~8%, attire/music/misc the rest. Start from percentages, then convert to dollars and adjust — it keeps the plan balanced and makes trade-offs explicit when one category creeps up.

Pitfalls & errors
Tie to the total. Make the last line a remainder so allocations sum exactly.
Percents sum to 100%. Verify before trusting the split.
Leave a buffer. Hold ~5–10% for surprises.
