Every student asks it: “What do I need on the final to get the grade I want?” Rearrange the weighted-grade formula to solve for the required final score — capped at the realistic 0–100 range.

Quick formula: final score needed for a target course grade:
=MAX(0, (target - current*(1 - final_weight)) / final_weight)
Subtract the points already locked in, then divide the remaining gap by the final's weight.

How it works

How it works:

  1. Current grade counts for 1 - final_weight of the course; the final for final_weight.
  2. The needed score is (target - current × (1 - final_weight)) / final_weight.
  3. Wrap in MAX(0, …) so a guaranteed pass shows 0, not a negative number.
  4. A result above 100 means the target is no longer reachable — flag it with an IF.

Make the answer honest: wrap it as =IF(needed>100, "Not possible", IF(needed<=0, "Already secured", needed)). That turns a raw number into a clear message — students see whether they need to study hard, can coast, or should aim for a different target grade.

Pitfalls & errors

Weight as decimal. A 30% final is 0.30 in the formula.

Current excludes the final. “Current grade” is the average of everything except the final.

Cap the result. Over 100 means unreachable; below 0 means already secured.
