Caterers need entrée counts — how many chicken, beef, and vegetarian. COUNTIF tallies each choice from the RSVP list, and the percentages show the mix at a glance.

Quick formula: count one entrée choice:
=COUNTIF(meal_choices, "Beef")
Count each meal selection from the guest list; the counts go straight to the caterer.

How it works

How it works:

  1. COUNTIF(meal_choices, "Beef") tallies each entrée — one formula per choice.
  2. Sum the counts and confirm they match the attending headcount (no missing selections).
  3. Show the mix as a percentage: count / total for each choice.
  4. For kids’ meals or allergies, add more COUNTIFs — or COUNTIFS to cross with table number.

Reconcile to the headcount. The sum of entrée counts should equal attending guests — if it’s short, someone hasn’t picked a meal. =attending - SUM(entree_counts) surfaces the gap so you can chase those guests before the caterer’s deadline, rather than discovering empty plates at the reception.

Pitfalls & errors

Reconcile to headcount. Entrée counts should sum to attending guests.

Consistent labels. "Beef" must match exactly for COUNTIF.
