Yield per acre is the headline farm number — total harvest divided by acres planted. It drives every downstream calc: revenue, break-even, and field-to-field comparison.
The example
9,000 bushels off 50 acres.
| A | B | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Item | Value |
| 2 | 9000 / 50 | — |
| 3 | Yield | → 180 bu/ac |
The formula
The formula:
How it works
How it works:
- Divide total harvest by acres planted for the per-acre yield.
- Keep units consistent — bushels for grain, tons for forage, pounds for produce.
- Multiply by price for revenue per acre:
yield × price. - Compare fields with AVERAGEIF by variety or soil type to spot the winners.
Yield per acre is the great equalizer. A 9,000-bushel field sounds better than a 5,000-bushel one until you learn the first is 90 acres (100 bu/ac) and the second is 25 acres (200 bu/ac). Always normalize to per-acre before comparing fields, varieties, or seasons — raw totals just measure how much land you farmed.

Pitfalls & errors
Planted vs harvested acres. Decide which denominator — they differ after losses.
Consistent units. Bushels, tons, or pounds — do not mix.
Zero acres. Empty field area gives #DIV/0!.
