Flooring sells by the box, each covering a set area. Add a waste allowance to the room area, divide by the coverage per box, and round up to whole boxes.
The example
168 ft² + 10%, 22 ft²/box.
| A | B | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Item | Value |
| 2 | Area + waste | 185 |
| 3 | ÷ 22/box | → 9 boxes |
The formula
The formula:
How it works
How it works:
- Take the room area and add a waste allowance (10% typical, 15% for diagonal or patterned layouts).
- Divide by the coverage per box printed on the carton.
ROUNDUP(…, 0)rounds to whole boxes — partial boxes aren’t sold.- Buy from the same dye lot and keep a spare box for future repairs.
Order a full extra box for repairs. Flooring dye lots change between production runs, so a future patch from a different lot won’t match. Many installers add one box beyond the rounded-up count and store it — cheap insurance against a visible repair years later.
