Sign Shop: Material Waste Percent

Excel Formulas › Sign Shop

All versions

A 4x8 sheet costs the same whether you get three signs out of it or six. Waste percent is the number that tells you whether your nesting is any good.

Quick formula: Unused area over total area:
=(PRODUCT(B2,C2)-PRODUCT(D2,E2)*F2)/PRODUCT(B2,C2)

Three 24x36 signs out of a 48x96 sheet uses 2,592 of 4,608 square inches — 43.75% waste.

The example

Three cut plans, all from a standard 48 x 96 inch sheet.

3Panel set4896244840.00%
4A-frames48961824825.00%

The formula

Two areas and one subtraction:

=(PRODUCT(B2,C2)-PRODUCT(D2,E2)*F2)/PRODUCT(B2,C2) // (sheet area - used area) / sheet area

How it works

Work in square inches throughout and the units cancel:

  1. PRODUCT(B2,C2) is the sheet area — 48 x 96 is 4,608 square inches.
  2. PRODUCT(D2,E2)*F2 is the area you used: one sign's area times how many you nested on the sheet.
  3. Subtracting gives the offcut area, and dividing by the sheet area turns it into a percentage.
  4. Format the cell as a percent so 0.4375 reads as 43.75%.

Four 24x48 panels tile a 48x96 sheet perfectly — zero waste. That is the benchmark every other cut plan gets measured against.

Cost of the waste

Turn the percentage into dollars you can see on the job sheet.

Yield instead of waste

Some shops prefer to track the good half.

Pitfalls & errors

The formula does not know whether the signs physically fit. Nine 24x36 signs mathematically use less than two sheets, but they will not nest that way — check the layout before trusting the percent.

Leave a margin for the cutter's grip and blade kerf. Reduce the usable sheet dimensions by an inch or so rather than pretending you cut edge to edge.

Frequently asked questions

What is an acceptable waste percent?
It depends entirely on the sign size. Sizes that tile the sheet run near zero; odd custom sizes routinely hit 30 to 40%. Track it per job type rather than chasing one target.
Should offcuts count as waste if I keep them?
Add a Reusable column and subtract that area before dividing. Only the pieces genuinely too small to use belong in the waste figure.
