Steps to Distance and Calories

Excel Formulas › Fitness & Gym

All versions

Turn a step count into distance and calories. Steps times stride length gives distance; a rough calories-per-step (or per mile by weight) estimates the energy.

Quick formula: distance in miles from steps:
=steps * stride_length_ft / 5280
Steps times stride (feet) divided by 5,280 feet per mile gives distance.

The example

10,000 steps, 2.5 ft stride.

AB
1ItemValue
210000 × 2.5—
3÷ 5280→ 4.73 mi

The formula

The formula:

=steps * stride_length_ft / 5280 // steps × stride ÷ 5280

How it works

How it works:

  1. Distance = steps × stride_length_ft / 5280 (feet per mile).
  2. Estimate stride as ~0.4–0.45 × height, or measure it.
  3. Calories ≈ distance_miles × weight_lb × 0.57 for walking.
  4. Swap 5,280 for 3,280.84 to get kilometers instead.

Variations

Calories walking

Rough estimate:

=distance_miles * weight_lb * 0.57

Distance in km

Metric:

=steps * stride_m / 1000

Steps for a goal

To hit miles:

=target_miles * 5280 / stride_length_ft

Pitfalls & errors

Stride varies. Estimate from height or measure — it drives the result.

Units. Stride in feet with 5,280; meters with 1,000.

Calories are rough. The 0.57 factor is a walking approximation only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert steps to distance in Excel?
Use =steps * stride_length_ft / 5280 for miles. 10,000 steps at 2.5 ft is about 4.73 miles.
How do I estimate calories from steps?
Convert to distance, then ≈ distance_miles × weight_lb × 0.57 for walking.
How do I find my stride length?
Estimate as roughly 0.4–0.45 × height, or measure it directly for accuracy.
