Shops usually charge full price for the first windshield chip and a reduced rate for each additional one, because the setup is already done. This recipe prices that structure in one formula and also shows the average price per chip so you can see the effective discount.
3 chips at $60 for the first and 50% off the others costs $120, an average of $40 each.
The example
Three windshields with different chip counts. The average price per chip falls as the number of chips rises.
| A | B | C | D | E | F | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Case | Chips | First $ | Discount | Total | Avg per chip |
| 2 | Single chip | 1 | $60.00 | 50.0% | $60.00 | $60.00 |
| 3 | Three chips | 3 | $60.00 | 50.0% | $120.00 | $40.00 |
| 4 | Four chips | 4 | $75.00 | 40.0% | $210.00 | $52.50 |
The formula
The first chip bills at full price; each extra chip bills at the discounted fraction:
How it works
Here is the logic, one piece at a time:
IF(B2<1,0,...)returns zero when there are no chips, avoiding a negative price.C2is the first repair at full price.(B2-1)*C2*(1-D2)prices the remaining chips at the discounted rate.- Dividing the total by the chip count in the second column shows the average price per chip.
Cap the chip count at the number your shop will repair; beyond that, a replacement is the better recommendation.

Enter the chip count, the first-repair price and the discount.
Variations
Cap at replacement cost
Never quote more than the cost of replacing the windshield.
Tiered discount
Use a bigger discount from the fourth chip onward.
Pitfalls & errors
Without the IF guard, zero chips returns -$30, a negative quote.
Chips near the edge or in the driver's line of sight may not be safely repairable regardless of the price.
Show the customer the per-chip average; it makes the discount concrete.
