Most gutter quotes bundle a few downspout flushes into the base price and charge for the rest. The formula has one trap: a house with fewer downspouts than the bundle would produce a negative add-on and quietly discount the job. This recipe wraps the count in MAX so the extra charge stops at zero.
A $150 quote with 6 downspouts, 4 included and a $12 fee comes to $174.
The example
Three houses with different downspout counts. The third has fewer downspouts than the bundle, so no add-on is charged.
| A | B | C | D | E | F | G | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Case | Base | Downspouts | Included | Fee each | Total | Add-on |
| 2 | Ranch | $150 | 6 | 4 | $12 | $174 | $24 |
| 3 | Two-story | $220 | 8 | 4 | $12 | $268 | $48 |
| 4 | Cottage | $95 | 3 | 4 | $12 | $95 | $0 |
The formula
The fee only applies to downspouts past the included count, and never below zero:
How it works
Here is the logic, one piece at a time:
C2-D2counts downspouts beyond the included number.MAX(0, ...)clamps that count at zero, so a small house is never given a negative charge.- Multiplying by the fee in
E2converts extra downspouts to dollars. - Adding the base price in
B2gives the quoted total.
Keep the included count and fee in their own cells so you can change the bundle without editing formulas.

Enter the base price, downspout count, included count and fee.
Variations
Cap the add-on
Use MIN to stop the add-on exceeding a ceiling you will not exceed in a quote.
Flush only the blocked ones
Multiply by a blocked-downspout count instead when you charge per clog rather than per downspout.
Pitfalls & errors
Without MAX, a 3-downspout house with 4 included becomes (3-4)*12 = -$12 and your quote drops below the base price.
Count downspouts on site, not from satellite photos; additions and capped downspouts change the number.
Show the customer the included count and the per-downspout fee on the quote so the add-on is never a surprise.
